In Project Zomboid, securing reliable transportation is often the key to surviving long journeys and escaping overwhelming undead hordes. While finding vehicle keys is ideal, hotwiring allows survivors to gain immediate access to operational automobiles without searching every nearby building. Understanding the skill requirements and steps needed to start a car manually can turn a desperate situation into a successful escape strategy.

Necessary Skill Requirements for Hotwiring

Before attempting to hotwire any vehicle, your character must meet specific skill prerequisites to complete the process successfully. You need level 1 in Electrical and level 2 in Mechanics, or you can choose the Burglar occupation during character creation to bypass these requirements entirely. Reading skill books and dismantling household electronics are effective ways to gain the required experience early in the game.

Gathering Essential Tools and Accessing the Vehicle

To hotwire a car, you must first get inside the vehicle's cabin and possess a screwdriver in your inventory. If the doors are locked, smash a window that is farthest from the driver seat to avoid taking damage from broken glass when entering. Once inside, sit in the driver seat and open the vehicle radial menu by pressing the interaction key.

Executing the Hotwiring Process

Select the hotwire option from the radial menu while sitting in the driver seat with your screwdriver ready. Your character will attempt to bypass the ignition, which may take multiple tries depending on luck and skill levels. Once successful, two wires will appear crossed under the ignition dashboard display, signaling that the vehicle is ready to start.

Checking Battery and Fuel Status Before Driving

Hotwiring bypasses the need for a key, but it does not guarantee that the engine will start immediately if critical components are failing. Check the vehicle dashboard to ensure there is enough fuel in the tank and that the battery still retains a charge. If the battery is dead or the tank is empty, you will need to siphon gas or recharge the battery before hitting the open road.
